About CERD

The Centre for Energy Research and Development (CERD) at Obafemi Awolowo University is a leading hub for innovation and excellence in energy research. Established to address the critical energy challenges facing Nigeria and the world, CERD is dedicated to advancing knowledge and developing sustainable energy solutions.

Projects

The first research that culminated in a patency, targeted addressing a gap in meeting food security. The focus is a post-harvest technology to address humongous wastage that occur in the food industry

Cell Death Kinetics

Cell death kinetics refers to the study of the rates and patterns by which cells die. Understanding these kinetics is crucial for elucidating the mechanisms of various diseases, developing therapeutic interventions, and optimizing treatments such as chemotherapy. Cell death can occur through different pathways, including apoptosis, necrosis, autophagy, and ferroptosis, each with distinct kinetics and molecular mechanisms.

Analysis of Ferroptosis

Ferroptosis is a type of regulated cell death characterized by iron dependency and the accumulation of lipid peroxides. It is distinct from other forms of cell death such as apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy, and has been linked to various physiological and pathological processes, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, and ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Bacteria Markers

Bacterial markers are specific molecules or compounds that are used to identify and characterize bacteria. These markers can be proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, or other biomolecules unique to certain bacterial species or strains. They play a crucial role in microbiology, medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and biotechnology.

Publications

Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles as Biosensor for Timely Detection of Post-Harvest Deterioration of Fruit. The second research is titled - Method for Treatment of High Contaminated Water with Titanium Oxide Modified Natural Zeolitic Materials (BIOREMM).

Critical Reviews in Molecular & Cell Biology 53: 99-114.(2018)

The outcome of the effort was to prepare simple and energy-efficient point-of-use material (BIOREMM) for remediation of water containing both biological and chemical contaminants. Following images show the BIOREMM.

CBE-Life Sciences Education, 17(1), ar10., 2018

The present invention indicates a simple, cheap, and timely detection approach for monitoring fruit deterioration when it is not yet evident to the naked eye using a biosynthesized biosensor. The biosensor materials will cut down losses occurring from fruit deterioration, prevent environmental pollution, and reduce the severity of the health hazards caused by fruit spoilage through on-spot monitoring.

Scientific diversity interventions aim to promote a more inclusive and diverse environment within the scientific community. These efforts recognize the importance of diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences in driving innovation, enhancing research quality, and addressing complex global challenges. Scientific diversity encompasses various dimensions, including gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, disability, and more.

Upcoming Event

The 4th Biennial Conference of the African Science Integration Network (AScIN 2024) is scheduled to hold from July 15 – 19, 2024 at the Centre for EnergyResearch and Development, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

The African Science Integration Network (AScIN) is a forum for the exchange of the latest scientific discoveries and research ideas in the form of presentationsand discussions in theoretical and experimental research in very broad areas of the physical sciences in a multidisciplinary approach. The network connectsresearchers and scientists from African universities with professional researchers from industry, and seeks to provide mentoring for aspiring researchers andscientists, as well as postgraduate students.

AScIN 2024 is the fourth edition of AScIN’s biennial conference, whose theme is “Energy, Security, Environment and Health in Africa”. This theme has beencarefully chosen to mobilize efforts to meet certain challenges in critical areas of life such as energy and energy security, environmental protection and itsrequirements to ensure excellent and affordable health for all. These goals are fully integrated into the 17 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the last ofwhich is the global partnership between countries and international institutions to achieve these goals by 2030
