TRAINING WORKSHOP ON ION BEAM ANALYSIS
At

Centre for Energy Research and Development
(Under the auspices of Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission)
Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife

Theme:
INTRODUCTION TO ACCELERATOR-BASED
TECHNIQUES

Date
March 26- 28, 2013

Venue
Accelerator Building. CERD, OAU,Ile-ife

Background:

The 1.7MV Pelletron Accelerator, acquired from the National Electric Corporation (NEC), USA, located at the CERD is the only Ion Beam Analysis facility currently in the country and the West Africa Sub-Region. This Accelerator is a highly sophisticated nuclear analytical technique equipment, equipped with a RF charge exchange ion source(Alphatross) to provide proton and helium ions. This Aceelerator has provison for five beam lines
(0°, ±15°, ±30°), but currently using only one beam line (-15°) which is equiped with a multipurpose End-Station for broadBeam IBA analysis, namely, Particle Induced X-Ray Emission (PIXE), Particle Induced Gamma-Ray Emission (PIGE), Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) and Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA).

Contents
The IBA Trainging Workshop is introductory for problem conceptualization and solving of these problems through the use of Accelerator-Based Techniques. There will be hands-on-training sessions. It will consist of preparation and handling of samples for Accelerator analysis of :

•Environmental Samples (Aerosols,Sediments and Soils)
•Solid Minerals and Archeological Samples
•Forensic/Health Related Samples
•Materials Science/Thin-Film Analysis
•Agricultural/Biological Samples
