     Strategic
    Approach

          for the millennium

In order to optimize the Centre's resources i.e. manpower and facilities so that it can fulfil her roles in the millennium the following proposal must be urgently supported by government through adequate funding and complemented by other revenue generating activities.  The five key elements of the proposal involve:

(i)  Completion of the 9MV Tandem Accelerator project and acquisition of associated auxiliary facilities. The accelerator installation is more than 85% completed.  However, the auxiliary equipment necessary to carry out experiments and the power supply infrastructure are yet to begin

.(ii) Strengthening the existing nuclear analytical laboratories in the Centre.
Presently, there are over seven functioning laboratories in the Centre viz: AAS Laboratory, XRF Laboratory, Gamma Spectroscopy Laboratory, Thermoluminescence Dosimetry (TLD) Laboratory, Radiation Control and Monitoring Laboratory, Materials and Electronics Laboratory, Neutron Generator Laboratory.  The UV Spectrophotometer and GCMS laboratories will be completed soon.  These laboratories need associated sundry supplies and equipment before their operation can be optimized

.(iii) Acquisition of complementary nuclear related facilities especially in the area of Materials Science and Electronics

(iv) Training and retraining of staff scientist, engineers and technologists to acquire relevant experience in international laboratories

(v) Broadening the base of research and development focus to include addressing Energy-Environmental nexus issues.  This will enable the Centre and indeed the University to take advantage of the many funding opportunities available in the global community in this area as well as contributing to solution of local environmental problems.
